What Does the Mini Split Installation Process Look Like?

For over 3 years, we give homeowners the peace of mind that comes with a comfortable home

One of the easiest ways to get relief from these record-hot summers is by installing a ductless mini split system in your home. The mini split installation process is quick, easy, and much less intensive than installing central AC and much more effective than traditional window AC units.

With more than 90% of US households using air conditioning of some kind, mini split systems are becoming increasingly popular. These energy-efficient air conditioning and heating units allow climate control in individual rooms, so everyone is comfortable year-round.

The mini split installation process is one of the main selling points of these effective climate solutions. Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional (highly recommended!), you can expect less mess and quicker results.

The Mini Split Installation Process

You or your HVAC professional can complete the installation process in just one day if everything is done correctly and carefully.

It’s important to remember that heavy items and dangerous electrical equipment will be handled during the mini split installation process and to take safety precautions before you start.

Step 1: Mount the Units

The first step of the mini split installation process is to mount and install the indoor units. Your HVAC technician will attach the mount to the wall where you wish the mini split system to be. Once installed, they’ll drill a hole at a downward angle in the wall next to the right corner of the mount.

Next, finish installing the indoor unit and hang it on the mount.

Step 2: Install Outdoor Unit

A mini split system has two units, one indoor and one outdoor. The outdoor unit should be placed on a condenser pad outside in a convenient and easy-to-reach spot on your property. Usually, this is right next to the house.

Step 3: Connect the Units

Once both the outdoor and indoor units are installed, they must be connected by the refrigerant lines. These lines will run from the back of the indoor unit through the walls, coming out of a hole near the outdoor unit.

These lines will be connected and matched by colored wires to ensure functionality.

Step 4: Electrical Setup

This next step is one of the most important and dangerous in the mini split installation process. It is highly recommended to work with a trained HVAC professional to ensure the electrical set up is done correctly and safely.

The mini split system will be connected to a dedicated circuit to ensure optimal functionality.

Step 5: Run the System

Once everything is installed and in place, the technician will start to release the refrigerant through the pipes and check for any leaks.

After confirming there are no leaks in the mini split system, you can turn the units on and experience the cooling comfort of your new air conditioning.

Is Mini Split Installation DIY?

While there are some homeowners out there who complete the mini split installation process on their own, many homeowners choose to work with a professional HVAC company.

It’s completely possible to install mini split systems yourself, but to avoid expensive mistakes and possible injury, it’s best left to the professionals with the right tools, equipment, and experience.
